On 5 and 6 October 2009 Olpac was pleased to contribute to the Participate in Prosperity Program by conducting two 'White Card' courses (Work safely in the construction industry CPCCOHS1001A) for 21 unemployed or under-employed people.
Participate in Prosperity is a four-year strategy that targets the multiple barriers that prevent people in areas of high disadvantage from participating in work by:
1. improving the coordination and integration of government and nongovernment human services in targeted locations to help people overcome barriers in their lives, for example, financial, health and housing issues as well as employment challenges; and
2. supporting the expansion of social enterprises to provide transitional and real employment for individuals.
Olpac director, Glenn Robertson, said "It was a very rewarding experience and I was so impressed with the enthusiasm of the people who attended the training".

The fund-raising event 'Jazz on the River' was a wonderful afternoon in brilliant winter sunshine. Somerville House students entertained the attendees with - you guessed it - Jazz at the Somerville House Water Sports Facility. The entertainment also included several dance displays by two beautiful young Nepalese girls.
Olpac donated several raffle prizes to assist twelve Somerville House Seniors to raise money for cervical vaccines. The students will soon take a supply of the vaccines to Nepal where it will be used to vaccinate Nepalese school girls against cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer kills more than 250,000 women every year worldwide, 90% of these women live in developing countries. In Nepal cervical cancer is the number one cause of cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 60 and far exceeds even breast cancer.
24 May 2009
In September this year, twelve Somerville House Seniors will embark on the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation's 'Discover Nepal Experience' to deliver much needed cervical vaccines to the school girls in Nepal. Olpac is a sponsor of an initiative to raise the money needed to purchase these vaccines.

MEDIA RELEASE
Olpac put sizzle in Fatality Free Friday events
Queensland’s RoadTek drivers will have some food for thought on May 8 when Olpac hosts a breakfast sausage sizzle and a road safety training session at the Nathan Depot.
The event will be held as a lead up to Fatality Free Friday on 22 May 2009.
Many of these drivers are on the road every day – constructing and maintaining Queensland’s road infrastructure and they’ve seen crashes as well as countless near misses.
So there’s a reason why every one of them is right behind Fatality Free Friday.
Olpac is a leading training and consulting organisation and according to director Robert Cochrane, Fatality Free Friday is a terrific vehicle to promote road safety in all its forms.
“For us it’s about safety at work and safety on the roads,” he said.
“The people we train work on the roads while traffic goes past each day and after seeing the way some people drive, we’re more than mindful when we get behind the wheel ourselves.”
The RoadTek Nathan Depot Breakfast Sausage Sizzle is hosted by Fatality Free Friday sponsor Olpac which provides training and consulting services to government departments and local government, as well as mining, construction, power, gas and oil companies.
The company specialises in incident investigation, major incident management and machinery training courses.
Mr Cochrane said he hoped that this event will be part of future road safety events associated with Fatality Free Friday.
“This is just the beginning,” he said. “We’re hoping this concept takes off across all the government departments we work with.
“The Fatality Free Friday sausage sizzle is the ideal vehicle for us to say thank you to our valued clients in a way that matches our corporate ethos of safe effective driving.”
The event will feature a presentation by Senior Sergeant Peter Carmichael of the Queensland Police Service who will highlight the dangers of the deadly mixture of alcohol, drugs and driving. He will also run through some of the road rules and traffic policy that particularly impacts on professional drivers.
Fatality Free Friday is Australia’s only community-based national road safety campaign.
“Our theme for 2009 is ‘how to save a life’,” said Russell White, author, road safety advocate and Fatality Free Friday founder.
“And we congratulate Olpac for taking a leading role in promoting driver education and safety in the very important area of professional drivers on Fatality Free Friday," said Russell.
“That level of proactive community involvement is a real credit and will go a long way in helping us achieve our aim of fewer deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”
Fatality Free Friday 2009 marks the third year of the campaign and has attracted a wide range of commercial sponsors and supporters including Isuzu Ute, Tyres & More, Suncorp Insurance, Armor All, Energex, Castrol Edge, QFleet, QR, 4BC and the Motorama Group.
